Our 2026 Honoree

Vanita Gupta

From her influential work at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human rights, to groundbreaking roles in the Department of Justice, Vanita Gupta has shaped U.S. civil rights law and policy, secured justice for the most vulnerable, and united advocates across causes.

Vanita Gupta led the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division under President Obama, overseeing investigations into policing practices in Ferguson and Baltimore and taking on laws that discriminated against transgender people. From 2021 to 2024, she served as U.S. Associate Attorney General – becoming the first woman of color to hold that post – where she helped drive the Biden-Harris administration’s civil rights agenda, including major protections for LGBTQ+ people. She now serves as the inaugural director of the Center for Law and Public Trust at NYU School of Law, where her work focuses on reimagining and rebuilding institutions of American democracy.

Gupta’s work reflects a deep dedication to advancing equality for marginalized people. It’s a privilege for GLAD Law to recognize her transformative contributions to LGBTQ+ rights and broader civil liberties.
