Take Action Now: Protect the Equal Access Rule
On April 28, the Trump administration announced a proposal to rescind the Equal Access Rule (EAR), which guarantees equal access to programs and services funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
These protections against discrimination are critical to ensure safe access to shelter for transgender and intersex people experiencing homelessness, survivors of violence, and those fleeing disasters. The proposed changes would make it harder and, in some cases, unsafe for transgender and intersex people and other marginalized communities to access housing and services.
Why do public comments matter?
When government agencies propose a new rule or regulation, they are usually legally required to publish the proposal and provide the public with a time period for feedback. Public comments are an essential way to create a record, and agencies are required by law to consider these comments before finalizing the rule.
We have until June 29 to make it clear – we oppose discrimination for transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people who need housing and other services.
