Zoe Hayes (they/them) (pronounced Zo) is a 3L at the University of Michigan Law School. Zoe is originally from the Bay Area, and went to undergrad at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating from Berkeley, Zoe completed a fellowship with the Bay Area JusticeCorps where they were placed in a self-help center, assisting with divorces, custody matters, and restraining orders. Zoe is extremely passionate about LGBTQ+ rights and chose to go to law school specifically to pursue civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community. Since 2025, they have been the chair of OUTreach, Michigan Law’s trans community-serving pro bono project. Zoe also worked on Michigan Marriage Equality which sought to overturn MI’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Zoe is also the law student representative for the State Bar of MI LGBTQ+ Law Section Council, the chair of the LGBTQ+ Law Section’s Public Policy Committee, and is the Secretary for the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association Law Student Division. Zoe has published articles with the MI LGBTQ+ State Bar Journal, Writing on the Stonewall, on DEI and the future of same-sex marriage in MI, and is currently working with a Michigan professor on an article on Chiles v. Salazar. In addition, Zoe serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Michigan Journal of Gender & Law and has a forthcoming article in the Journal on disability rights, trans rights, and prison housing. For the three minutes a week they spend outside of law school, Zoe loves to design American Traditional tattoo flash, loves powerlifting and weightlifting, and loves to spend time with their two orange cats, Mango and Papaya, their partner, and their step-cat, Wayne.
