Ensuring Access to Fertility Health Care in Rhode Island
Status: Loss
Update: H7629 and S2460 died in committee in June 2026.
Access to fertility treatments to build a family is critically important to so many people, yet across the United States, there is a lack of access to comprehensive care and fertility care is under attack.
Rhode Island’s private insurance mandate requiring private insurers to cover family-building health care is outdated and no longer reflects the medical standard of care. This gap in access is especially burdensome for LGBTQ individuals and couples who, like all others, aspire to create loving families and are left unprotected by coverage they pay for.
GLAD Law submitted testimony in support of H7629 and S2460, legislation that would strengthen state law to make fertility health care more accessible in Rhode Island. H7629 and S2460 would would align state law with the current medical standard of care as articulated by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine to include coverage of LGBTQ people, single people, and patients with conditions such as endometriosis or pelvic pain. The bills would also clarify aspects of fertility preservation coverage and add explicit nondiscrimination language to ensure all Rhode Islanders can equally access fertility treatment.
